How to Choose a Scrub?

When your skin is feeling a little dull, there’s nothing like a good scrub to get it looking vibrant and feeling fresh again. But how to choose a scrub which is good for you?

If you have never heard of exfoliation, chances are you are either struggling with your skin or you are blessed with wonderful, flawless skin. If you fall in either of the two categories, you must start exfoliating your skin at regular intervals. It is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin which makes your skin healthy and supple. Your skin naturally sheds dead skin cells to make room for new cells every 30 days or so. But, dead cells may not shed completely. This can result in dry, flaky patches and clogged pores. Exfoliating can help prevent this.

These days there are several exfoliates available. Cleansing scrubs, body brushes, and loofahs are all common methods. Majority of the exfoliators are very harsh and may cause permanent damage to your skin if used in a wrong manner. For example, you must have seen commercially available walnut scrubs or apricot scrubs. They work great. After you use them, you may feel great but your skin is not. The walnut granules are very harsh for your skin and they may cause micro-tears onto your skin over time. This may also result into extreme dryness as well as unwanted peeling. The overuse may also lead to textured skin and major skin damage.

The gentle touch

For everyday exfoliation choose a scrub with gentle ingredients. There are some wonderful and natural alternatives available to these. These include sugar, coffee, oats, salt and more.

Sugar

Castor sugar is a great exfoliant and is au naturel. The granules are small and hence ideal to remove the dirt and debris out of your skin. Sugar also contains glycolic acid, which helps to break down dead skin cells and reduce the appearance of fine lines.

Coffee

It may wake you up in the morning but it can also wake your skin up. Coffee can reduce the puffiness around your eyes. The crumbly texture of the coffee will clean up your skin without irritating it.

Oats

You may like them. You may refuse to eat them. But oats make a very good exfoliator. They are a very gentle scrub that leaves your skin smooth and soft. Oats contain avenanthramides, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds that soothe itchy, dry and irritated skin.
